An Abu Dhabi student has been directed to repay Dh60,000 he received from a colleague after he dropped a promise to buy him a motorcycle from abroad. The Arab man was also ordered to pay Dh4,000 to the plaintiff for damages he suffered.

The young man filed a civil suit against the student, who is also his friend, to return the Dh60,000 that was taken from him. He also demanded that the defendant pay him Dh10,000 as compensation for the moral and material damage he suffered as a result.

The plaintiff claimed in the suit that the defendant agreed to buy him a motorcycle from abroad for Dh60,000.

He said he transferred the cash to the defendant’s bank account after reaching an agreement and having a conversation via WhatsApp. But despite receiving the cash, the student did not follow through on his promise. When the plaintiff asked him to return his money, the defendant refused. This forced the young man to drag him to court.

The Abu Dhabi Court of First Instance for Family and Civil Administrative Claims had earlier issued a ruling ordering the defendant to repay the Dh60,000 he had received from the plaintiff. He was also told to pay him Dh4,000 to compensate him for his breach of the agreement.

The defendant challenged the decision with the Family and Civil Administrative Claims Court of Appeal, which upheld the lower court’s decision.

The student was also told to pay the plaintiff’s legal fees.
