The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (Ewec) has announced that four major utility developers have submitted proposals to develop the new 1.5GW Al Ajban solar photovoltaic (PV) independent power project (IPP) in Abu Dhabi.
These are Saudi Arabia-based Acwa Power; French utility giant EDF Renewables, Japan’s Marubeni Corp and a consortium with China’s JinkoPower and Japan’s largest power generation company Jera as partners.
Ewec has received 43 EoIs (Expressions of Interest) from potential bidding companies and consortiums, of which 19 were eligible to proceed to the RFP stage after submitting a statement of eligibility.
In making the announcement, Ewec said Al Ajban Solar PV is its third world-leading solar power project, thus making Abu Dhabi home to the three largest single-unit solar power plants.
Once in commercial operation, it will generate enough electricity to power approximately 160,000 homes in the UAE and is expected to reduce Abu Dhabi’s CO2 emissions by up to 2.4 million tonnes per year. It will also increase Ewec’s total solar power generation capacity to around 4 GW (AC), it added.
Additionally, the Al Ajban Solar PV Project plays a key role in helping Ewec achieve its strategic plan to increase Abu Dhabi’s solar power generation capacity to 7.3 GW by 2030 and meet Abu Dhabi’s than 60% of the total electricity demand.
Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of Ewec, said: “Al Ajban Solar PV demonstrates EWEC’s accumulated expertise in commissioning and deploying world-leading innovative, emissions-free utility projects to ensure and deliver sustainable and reliable power across the UAE supply.”
He said Ewec’s renewable energy projects are further strengthening the UAE’s position as a global leader and role model in planning and implementing strategic and tangible actions to achieve long-term socio-economic and sustainable development goals.
He added: “The receipt of these competitive bids is a testament to our expertise in commissioning world-leading renewable energy projects that have attracted internationally renowned companies to collaborate in delivering the UAE’s carbon-neutral future.”
Going forward, the proposals will go through a detailed technical and commercial evaluation process to select the best proposal, Ewec said.
The award announcement and power purchase agreement are expected to be signed in the fourth quarter, it added.– trade arab news agency
