United Arab Emirates – Anyone who violates mountaineering regulations and endangers the lives of others will be fined Dh50,000, according to a decision by the Fujairah Adventure Center (FAC).
The decision, which came into effect on March 1, comes as more and more cases of people getting lost on the mountain have recently been reported. It covers three groups of people – mountaineers trekking in rugged terrain, organizers of mountain adventure tours and approved tour companies.
Amr Zainuddin, director of the Fujairah Adventure Centre, said four inspectors had been appointed in cooperation with mountain residents who would work with them to monitor violations on 10 mountain trails in the emirate.
Zainuddin said the center has conducted extensive research to organize mountaineering and cross-country excursions, which are very popular with amateurs and tourists. He added that the new decision is expected to reduce the percentage of injuries and rescue operations caused by accidents in mountainous areas.
The decision stipulates the standards and requirements for mountaineering in the emirate, and every 10 people appoint a leader to ensure the safety of the journey.
The director detailed the supervisory duties of the inspectors, which will be carried out in cooperation with the people of the area during the morning and evening hours. The regulations they will enforce include protecting the local environment and respecting the mountain people and their customs and traditions. Climbers also need to register via a code located at the start of the trail before they can begin their ascent. This is to allow people and companies to record the start time of their activities, which will help in the process of organizing trips and updating the number of people on each trail.
He noted that the center has developed 10 mountain trails in different parts of the emirate by providing service facilities and guide boards to let people know where they are.
The decision is also expected to provide more organization for amateur mountaineering and travel companies. It requires these companies to hold a business license issued by Fujairah or any other emirate’s competent authority. They also need to organize first aid courses and provide a mountain leader. This will allow tour companies to carry out their activities in the emirate while ensuring the safety of their clients and employees.
