Dominant UAE tops jiu-jitsu tournament at NAS Sports Championships

The UAE team clinched the title with a stellar performance at the 10th Nad Al Sheba (NAS) Sports Championship 2023 Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Dubai on Friday.

The UAE topped the national standings with a total of 827 points. The UAE’s athletes demonstrated their authority on their home turf with 12 gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze medals.

Themed ‘Unlimited Ability’, the NAS Sports Championships, organized by the Dubai Sports Council (DSC), are the largest of their kind in terms of participation and prize money.

Brazil ranks second with 877 points, behind the UAE, while Kazakhstan is third with 80 points.

The UAE team displayed extraordinary skill, technique and physical fitness throughout the competition, showing their strength in every game. They dominated the mat, easily overwhelmed their opponents, and earned the coveted top spot in the overall standings.

Jiu-jitsu heavyweights Brazil also did well, taking on the UAE with agility and tactical virtuosity. However, despite their valiant efforts, they were unable to overtake the UAE to finish runners-up.

Kazakhstan is a relatively new contender in the sport and has proven to be a surprise package in the game. Although they didn’t collect as many medals as other countries, they were promising and showed impressive fighting spirit, taking a well-deserved third place.

Al Ain Jiu-Jitsu Club stands out in the club category. Jiu-jitsu competitions attract athletes from various clubs and academies, who compete in the men’s and women’s competitions in junior, adult and master divisions.

The competition is organized by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) in partnership with DSC.

The competition is a fierce duel of outstanding talents and superb fighting skills, and the athletes win the highest honor with their best performance. Al Ain dominated the competition, winning 17 medals in multiple categories, including six gold, five silver and six bronze. Baniyas Club came second with 16 medals and Sharjah Self Defense Club came third with 12 medals in various categories.

Daheri welcomed the great success of the NAS Sports Championship.

“There are a lot of participants in this session. Although it is only for one day, we ask the organizing committee to do another session every two days to allow more players and players to participate.”

“There are a lot of people participating in different Jiu-Jitsu competitions at NAS this year, even if it is only for one day. In view of the overwhelming response, we ask the organizing committee to make the next competition within two days so that more players can be accommodated.”

Mohamed Hussain Al Marzooqi, Director of Marketing and Corporate Communications, UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, said: “We are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the NAS Sports Championship. Thanks to Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al With Maktoum’s unwavering support, the Nad Al Sheba Sports Championship has grown into a major community sporting event with a wide range of sports and categories since its first launch in 2013.”

Elsewhere, the second day of the padel championships saw exciting competition at the UAE and Expat Open.

Roberto Rodriguez and Faris Janahi comfortably advanced to the round of 16 with a comfortable 6-0, 6-1 win over Mohammad bin Obud al-Falassi and Ruben Valles Aries.

Elsewhere, Salem Alhouli and Andre Perez Vera beat Muhammad Ahmed Ahli and Alberto Dualdi 6-4, 6-3, Ali Al-Aref and Victor Mena beat Abdullah Al-Nuaimi and Goncalo da 6-2, 6-0 Costa.

Hamad Al-Janahi and Xavier Mason also advanced to the next round after beating Martin Noschesetenis and Omar Bahrouzyan 6-4, 7-6, 10-8.

Maied Al-Awadi and Gabi Lima defeated Abdullah Al-Marmar and Francisco Ferraro 6-3, 6-2 Hamad Binsamnoh Abdulla and Francisco Javier defeated Hamdan Aljanahi and Jesuan Gonzales 6-4, 6-3

Mohammad Alshamsi and Daniel Blanco advanced to the next round after beating Khaled Belhoul Alfalasi and Emilio Misas 6-6-1.

Ahmed Sultan and Thamer Abu Haijleh qualified after the duo of Khalfan Belhoul and Michael Maksoudian withdrew.
