Ex-Pak PM Imran Khan in jail, seeks bail today

Ex-Pak PM Imran Khan’s lawyers aim for bail during his prison term. The former cricket star received a three-year sentence after being arrested and found guilty in a graft case, rendering him ineligible for upcoming elections. He’s enduring harsh conditions in a historic prison near Islamabad.

Legal representatives seek improved confinement. Khan remains steadfast despite challenges, reflecting a trend of political comebacks from convictions. Previous arrest sparked May violence.

This arrest also triggered a crackdown resulting in the apprehension or concealment of nearly all top leaders from his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. As a result, the party is hastily assembling a new decision-making body.

Contrasting with his initial arrest’s furious backlash, Khan’s current imprisonment has garnered significantly less reaction—even on social media, where his name appears in half the number of Facebook posts.

“The subdued response to his detention is due to the intense crackdown on PTI members following the first arrest,” explained columnist Usama Khilji.

“The apprehensions of PTI affiliates subsequent to Imran Khan’s May arrest, along with hastily passed draconian laws by the coalition government, have cast a chilling effect on Pakistani citizens.”
