Fernando Alonso suffers disappointing end to Alps race

[ad_1]

Spaniard Fernando Alonso had a disappointing finish to French Formula 1 team Alpine after failing to finish Sunday’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Spaniard, who returns to Formula 1 in 2021 with the Enstone-based outfit that also brought him two world titles at Renault in 2005 and 2006, will take over at Aston Martin next year. Sebastian Vettel about to retire.

He had hoped to finish with a high score but was called to the pits to retire on lap 27 of the 58-lap race.

Alpine still leads McLaren in fourth in the constructors’ championship, but this is the sixth time Alonso has retired this year.

“Of course it’s disappointing,” said Alonso, 41, expressing frustration over reliability issues with the No. 14 car that hit him after another breakdown in Mexico last month.

“Millions of people are disappointed right now. That’s how it is, it’s been a very unfortunate season… not unfortunate, I don’t think we were prepared in terms of reliability,” Alonso added.

He pointed to other car failures that don’t count as DNFs (Did Not Complete) because they happened during qualifying or, for example, during a sprint race in Austria where his car couldn’t start due to an electrical problem.

“It’s kind of sad it ended like this, but that’s how it is,” he said.

After joining Aston Martin, Alonso will partner a team that sits seventh out of 10 teams in this year’s overall standings.

Still, with playoff testing set to get into the car as early as Tuesday, he said he can’t wait to get started. He expressed hope that he will have better luck next year to make up for his bad luck this season.

“It’s the best thing to happen today because it’s one less day of wearing green,” he said.

“Starting the project tomorrow, including the seat fit and a meeting with a couple of people, and then testing the car on Tuesday will hopefully be a beautiful chapter where all the bad luck this year will hopefully make up for next year.”
