New storytelling campaign showcases rare onboard locale and introduces team members who made it happen

Every feature of Shore Town needs to be delivered while traveling the world, with countless team members working together to run each ship seamlessly. For the first time ever, Holland America Line is bringing this story to life in a new show called “Cities by the Sea.”
“City by Sea” explores onboard areas such as the engine room, showcases the marvels of modern engineering and the laundry to see how thousands of sheets are processed every day. Guests will explore the town’s staples such as bakeries, restaurants, theaters, grocery stores and hardware stores, all without leaving the ship.
‘City at Sea’ is a daytime showcase that debuted on October 15 on the historic transatlantic voyage of the Rotterdam, and will be available on every ship across the fleet starting in early 2023.
For the first time ever, Holland America Line brings behind-the-scenes stories to life in a new show called “Cities by the Sea,” about the challenges and opportunities of working on a cruise ship. “City at Sea” is a day demo that debuted on October 15 on the historic transatlantic voyage of the Rotterdam and will be available on every cruise ship across the fleet starting in early 2023.
Cities at Sea, a storytelling event on the ship world stage, lifts the curtain on cruise ship operations with immersive video clips and interviews. With live commentary provided by the ship’s cruise and travel supervisor – joined by other onboard officials such as the captain and crew – guests were behind closed doors as they encountered people who made their home on the Holland America route away from home.
“‘City at Sea’ is a unique interpretation of a behind-the-scenes perspective that not only shows how our ships work, but also shares some amazing stories of the people who made it happen,” said Michael Smith, Senior Vice President of Customer Experience and Product Development, Holland America Line. “We put a lot of thought into thinking about how to make this show a transformative moment where the complexities of running a floating city become a celebration of the human spirit and all that we can accomplish.”

Engineers, medics, musicians and cabin crew describe the challenges and opportunities of working on a cruise ship, while one captain talks about how he sees himself as the mayor of a “city”. Guests will meet team members with decades of friendship and hear from tailors whose ties to the Holland America Line family span generations.
