Iceye supplies SAR satellites to UAE

Finland-based Iceye announced a deal on May 17 to develop a five star constellation United Arab Emirates geospatial analytics company Bayanat and UAE fleet operator Yahsat.

The first UAE SAR satellite built by Iceye is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2024. Iceye also supplies the ground section.

Prior to launch, Iceye will provide Bayanat with access to Iceye’s own constellation, “so that Bayanat can start leveraging radar satellite imagery for the benefit of public and private sector clients in the UAE,” said Rafal Modrzewski, Iceye CEO and co-founder. in a statement.

In addition to satellite and ground services, Iceye will provide Bayanat with computers, antennas and software related to mission control center operations.

In contrast to electro-optical imaging satellites, SAR satellites can capture images during the day, night and in all weather conditions.

Bayanat intends to use the collected data to make maps, detect changes, perform geospatial analysis and develop artificial intelligence algorithms. Yahsat is joining forces with Bayanat and Iceye as part of its campaign to ‘Strengthen the UAE’s space leadership in the MENA region’ [Middle East and North Africa] region,” Yahsat Group CEO Ali Al Hashemi said in a statement.
