Non-English Film Soars 90% on Netflix UK, Tops ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ Chart (Exclusive)

Watching of non-English stories has increased by 90% in the UK over the past three years, new Netflix figures show. All Quiet on the Western Front is currently the fourth most popular non-English language movie of all time on Netflix, with more than 150 million hours watched since its release on October 14, 2022. It has been on Netflix’s Top 10 non-English-language films list worldwide for 14 weeks and has entered the top 10 films in 91 countries, including Germany, UK, US, Australia, France, Mexico and South Korea.

All Quiet on the Western Front was nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture. After being nominated for a BAFTA and an Oscar, the film tripled its ratings. During the week of February 20-26, the film ranked second among non-English-language films with 5.47 million hours watched.

Interest in non-English content in the UK is being driven by younger audiences, new figures from pollster YouGov show. According to YouGov, as of February 2023, one in 10 Britons (12%) has streamed or downloaded at least one foreign language film in the past month. Among 18-24 year olds, the figure is 22%, 12% of whom have downloaded/streamed at least four movies. YouGov’s equivalent figures from February 2020 show that just 7% of Britons have downloaded or streamed a foreign language film – and that’s just 12% of 18-24 year olds.

Non-English content on Netflix has been growing in popularity for some time. In 2022, over 70% of global viewing will come from members watching titles from other countries.

Seven of Netflix’s 10 most popular non-English movies of all time premiere in 2022: Trolls (Norway), All Quiet on the Western Front (Germany), Black Crab (Sweden), Through My Windows” (Spain), “The Takedown” (France), “Love Adults” (Denmark) and “My Name is Vendetta” (Italy).
