ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates: New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) will host the 11th annual NYUAD Arab World Social Good Hackathon with a theme of sustainable development. Held April 27-30, the event will welcome more than 200 students from 24 countries who will use quantum computing to develop innovative solutions to challenges related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) .
The hackathon will cover a variety of fields, including health, education, film, music, business and science. NYU has earned a reputation for attracting world leaders in the field, and this year will see globally-renowned computer science professors, founders of successful startups, technology professionals and venture capitalists gather at NYU to lead talented Teams of computer science students, mostly from the Arab world, create mobile and web apps to improve society.
Students will have the unique opportunity to learn key practices in quantum computing (QC), quantum hardware and software development from 51 mentors who are global leaders in industry and academia.
Participants will explore quantum computing solutions to solve problems ranging from machine learning and artificial intelligence to physics (complex simulation problems), chemistry, computer science, healthcare, mathematics, online gaming, security, social sciences and art (quantum generated artwork ).
Diverse interdisciplinary teams (comprising five to seven students and two mentors per team) will work together to harness these new QC skills for the benefit of society and positively impact its future.
With experts from world-leading institutions such as MIT, ETH, and Stanford serving as sponsors and mentoring sources for participants, the event provided valuable insights into the full cycle of creating a tech start-up and fostered collaboration for future international projects opportunities to launch startups, and to conduct academic research.
The NYU Social Good Hackathon will be supported by the world’s top quantum computing experts from industry and academia, such as the NYU Center for Quantum and Topological Systems; the Institute for Technology and Innovation (TII), the Geneva Institute for Science and Diplomacy (GESDA), Zurich Experts from ETH School of Quantum Information, University of Calgary Institute of Quantum Science and Technology (IQST), MIT iQuHACK, QWorld and other world-class companies include IBM, qBraid and NIEW.

The keynote, which is open to the public, will feature leaders in quantum computing and the SDGs, including Loay Elbasyouni, a Palestinian-American electrical engineer who worked on the NASA team and was the lead engineer designing an innovative robot to land on Mars in 2021 Helicopters (Ingenuity); Özge Aydoğan, Head of UN Sustainable Development Goals Laboratory, Switzerland; Heike Rill, Head of Science and Technology and Head of IBM Research Quantum Europe; Graham Alabaster, Director, UN-Habitat Geneva; GESDA Impact Translation Executive Marieke Hood, Director; and Davide Venturelli, Associate Director for Quantum Computing, NASA Ames Research Center – NASA/USAR Quantum Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, et al.
Acclaimed Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky, returns to Abu Dhabi on April 27th from 7pm to 9pm for New York’s electronic music and hip hop concert on the NYU campus.
In its 11th edition, the three-day hackathon marks more than a decade since the NYUAD Quantum Computing International Hackathon, established to benefit social good in the Arab world and globally. The NYU International Hackathon for Social Good in the Arab World attracted more than 1,000 participants from more than 50 countries. The event has served as a launching pad for the careers of past attendees, who have landed scholarships, jobs, and even launched their own startups. Innovations from last year’s NYU International Hackathon included apps that optimize routes for mobile health services; detect viruses like COVID-19; verify the accuracy of algorithms; enhance energy security and sustainability; Classify sensitive medical data; increase employment in the Arab world, etc.
