“Old Things New” Kingston Chamber Music Festival | Entertainment

KINGSTON – Now in its 34th season, the Kingston Chamber Music Festival combines fan-favorite classics with new music.

Beginning July 26, a total of seven concerts will be held in Edwards Auditorium on the University of Rhode Island campus over two weeks in July and August.

Founded in 1989, the festival is the brainchild of David Kim, principal violinist of the Philadelphia Orchestra since 1999. Under the artistic direction of Natalie Zhu, the festival continues to bring many of the world’s best musicians to southern Rhode Island.

The festival will kick off on Wednesday, July 26 with Richard Woodhams, Principal Oboe Manager of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1977 to 2018. The concert will include rarely performed works by French composer Jean Francaix and Czech composer Josef Suk, which Woodhams will perform with Ayano. Ni Gong, violin; Chen Zhihong, viola; Clancy Newman, cello; and Natalie Zhu, piano. On Friday, July 28, the Grammy-nominated Dover Quartet returns with a program by Grammy-winning composers Mason Bates, Bela Bartók and Franz Schubert.

Woodhams, the Dover Quartet, Natalie Zhu and her husband Chen Zhehong (the first Taiwanese member of the Philadelphia Orchestra to win first prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition) will perform on July 30 Show on Sunday. The Woodham and Dover Quartet will collaborate on works by Bernhard Krussel. Dover first violinist Joel Link will join Zhu Wei in Fauré’s magical Violin Sonata in A major. The Dover Quartet and Chen will perform Anthony Dvořák’s Viola Quintet.

On Wednesday, August 2nd, Grammy Award winning guitarist Jason Vieaux will perform Aaron Jay Kernis’ 100 Greatest Dance Songs with violinists Jasmine Lin and Zachary DePue, violaist Burchard Tang and cellist Priscilla Lee. The evening also featured cellist Yegor Dyachkov, clarinetist David Shifrin and pianist Amy Yang.

On Friday, August 4, a concert titled “One of A Kind” will feature the collaborative expertise of violaist Che-Yen Chen; Jasmine Lin, viola; Burchard Tang, viola; Yegor Diacki Cove, cello; Priscilla Lee, cello; Dominique de Villiangour, cello; Zach Depp, violin; Jasmine Lin, violin; Amy Yang, piano; and Natalie Zhu, piano.

“I doubt anyone has programmed this way before,” says art director Natalie Zhu. “My husband Che-Hung and I came up with the idea of using the same instrument for the entire concert. We realized that week we had three cellists, three violas and two violins who were playing the viola at the same time, This provides an excellent but rare opportunity to explore chamber music written for four violas and three cellos.”

French cellist and composer Dominique de Williencourt will give the festival’s only solo recital at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Kingston on Saturday 5 August. Willian Kuhl will perform “The Spell of the Lonely Cellist,” which includes two Bach suites and one of his works on a white theme.

On Sunday, August 6th, the festival will conclude with a small concert by Zhu’s piano student, William Ge. The concert will feature works for viola, cello and piano by composer Tina Davidson, whose memoir, “Break Your Heart,” was published this past March.

In addition, a “Meet the Artist” series featuring interviews with various artists takes place an hour before each concert, while the festival caps off with pre-concert performances by young artists.
