Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is embarking on an ambitious $5.9 billion (Dh21.6 billion) investment journey to fortify its tourism sector, aligning with the national tourism strategy for the year 2040. This comprehensive initiative entails the implementation of 360 projects, encompassing a spectrum of tourism-friendly endeavors, infrastructural enhancements, and the development of captivating tourist attractions. Moreover, a pivotal aspect of this investment drive is its alignment with the target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, underscoring the commitment to preserving heritage sites and monuments, as highlighted by Azzan bin Qassim al Busaidy, the under-secretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the World Travel Week – Middle East in Oman, Busaidy elaborated on the multifaceted approach employed to realize this ambitious vision. “We are achieving this through the introduction of tourism-friendly legislation and enterprise-driven initiatives, investments in infrastructure and attractions, capacity building, the creation of specialized investment zones for tourism development and more,” he affirmed. This comprehensive strategy reflects Oman’s steadfast dedication to fostering a thriving tourism ecosystem that not only showcases its rich heritage but also ensures sustainable growth for the future.

Furthermore, the director-general of tourism promotion highlighted the significance of hosting the third edition of World Travel Week in Oman, providing a platform for companies specializing in adventure and luxury tourism to forge connections with their international counterparts. This event not only facilitates networking opportunities but also facilitates introductory visits to key touristic sites in Muscat, offering delegates a firsthand experience of Oman’s diverse cultural and natural treasures.

Among the heritage sites chosen for delegate visits are iconic landmarks that encapsulate its rich history and cultural legacy. From the majestic Sultan Qaboos Mosque in Salalah to the historic Al Hisn palace and market, each site offers a glimpse into Oman’s storied past. Additionally, delegates had the opportunity to explore archaeological wonders such as the Al Baleed archaeological park, the land of Frankincense museum, and the Samharam archaeological park, which stand as testaments to Oman’s ancient civilizations. The itinerary also included immersive experiences amidst nature, with visits to scenic locations like Samhan mountain, Wadi Darbat, and Taqah castle, providing a holistic exploration of Oman’s natural beauty and historical heritage.

As it embarks on this transformative journey to bolster its tourism sector, these initiatives underscore the nation’s commitment to sustainable development, cultural preservation, and economic prosperity. By leveraging its rich heritage and natural landscapes, Oman is poised to emerge as a premier destination for travelers seeking authentic experiences and unforgettable adventures. Through strategic investments, collaborative partnerships, and visionary leadership, Oman is charting a course towards a vibrant and sustainable tourism future, enriching the lives of visitors and locals alike while preserving the nation’s cultural heritage for generations to come.

This substantial investment in its tourism sector not only signifies a strategic economic move but also underscores the country’s dedication to preserving its cultural heritage and natural landscapes. By allocating resources to enhance infrastructure, develop tourist attractions, and implement eco-friendly initiatives, Oman is positioning itself as a leading destination for travelers seeking immersive experiences and sustainable tourism practices.

The comprehensive nature of the investment plan reflects its holistic approach to tourism development. From bolstering legislative frameworks to fostering entrepreneurship and capacity building, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is laying the groundwork for a vibrant and inclusive tourism ecosystem. By creating specialized investment zones tailored to tourism development, Oman aims to attract both domestic and international investors, driving economic growth and job creation in the sector.
