The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded the contract for the Garn Al Sabkha – Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Street Junction Improvement Project, a development investment of AED 374 million (US$ 102 million).

The project is part of RTA’s master plan to upgrade strategic road corridors in the east and west, such as Al Yalayis and Expo Roads, which was completed a few years ago.

In a statement, the RTA said the scope of work included the construction of four bridges with a span of 3,000 meters and a capacity to carry 17,600 vehicles per hour.

It will also pave 7 kilometers of roadworks, strengthen ground level intersections on service roads parallel to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road, as well as street lighting, traffic signals and systems, stormwater drainage network and irrigation system network.

Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Director General and Chairman of the Executive Board, said: “This project is part of a larger plan to improve the Garn Al Sabkha Street corridor; which connects Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road. The goal is to ensure smooth traffic between Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street and Al Asayel Street.”

Upon completion, the project will reduce travel distance and time by 40% from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road in the direction of Al Qusais and Sharjah, reducing travel time during peak hours from 20 minutes to 12 minutes.

“It will also reduce the time for vehicles traveling from Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road right to Al Yalayis Road towards Jebel Ali Port by 70 per cent, from 21 minutes to seven minutes,” he added.
