Renowned author and Emirati historian Peter Hellyer died on Monday at the age of 75 and was buried at the Baniyas Cemetery in Abu Dhabi. Hundreds of Emiratis and expatriates attended to pay their respects as Khalier was buried according to Islamic ceremonies. Senior ministers and officials attended the funeral.

Originally a British citizen, the historian was granted UAE citizenship in 2010. He arrived in the UAE in 1975 to make a documentary about the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and settled here. Herrell worked as a journalist, historian, environmentalist and archaeologist for nearly five years.

He has also authored numerous books on the UAE’s archaeological heritage and environment.

UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan led a large crowd to pay tribute to Khalier, highlighting his “dedication over the years” to the UAE. Sheikh Mohammed tweeted about his lasting impact in archaeology, the environment and the media. “Peter was a model of dedication and generosity, and we pray that he rests in peace.”

His funeral reflected what Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said of him: “This Briton loved the UAE until he became one of its sons.”

Those in attendance at the funeral and memorial service included Sheikh Salim bin Khalid Al Qasimi, UAE Minister of Culture and Youth; Sheikh Lubna Al Qasimi; Deputy Minister of Culture and Youth Mubarak Al Nakhi; and Lt. Col. Pilot Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad bin Hamdan.
