UAE National Elections Commission examines preparations for FNC elections

Abu Dhabi: The UAE’s National Elections Commission (NEC) held a preparatory meeting to consider the latest developments in preparations for the upcoming fifth round of elections to the Federal National Council (FNC) in 2023.

The upcoming election cycle is a continuation of the parliamentary process through which the UAE seeks to strengthen the FNC’s role and its legislative, oversight and parliamentary diplomatic responsibilities. The goal is to enable the council to contribute to the efforts of national progress and create all the necessary elements for comprehensive and sustainable development.

During the meeting, the committee considered plans related to all organizational, technical, technological and logistical procedures, assessing the readiness of the work team to ensure the high efficiency of the electoral process according to the best standards, further enhancing the UAE’s preeminent electoral experience occupying regional and global levels .

The meeting was held at the Abu Dhabi Presidential Court and was chaired by Abdul Rahman bin Mohammad Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention, Minister of State for FNC Affairs, Chairman of the National Elections Commission, and members of the Commission: Abdullah · Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, Minister of Justice; Abdullah bin Muhair Al Ketbi, Minister of Federal Supreme Council Affairs; and Dr. Mohamed Hamad Al Kuwaiti, Chairman of the UAE Cyber ​​Security Council.

Minister Al Owais emphasized that the upcoming FNC elections are a direct result of the empowerment process initiated in the UAE to create the necessary conditions to enhance citizens’ participation and contribution to parliamentary life. “The National Election Commission aligns its activities with the direction and vision of the UAE’s wise leadership to optimize the use of capabilities and skills and sustain the country’s progress and success in the upcoming fifth election cycle,” he added.

The meeting also highlighted the progress made by Emirati women in the Council, as their political and parliamentary rights have been significantly boosted following the increase in their share of Federal National Assembly seats to 50% from the start of the 2019 election cycle .

Subcommittee Responsibilities

The meeting discussed the mandate of subcommittees, including the Smart Systems Committee, to review the latest developments related to electoral bodies, candidates and voting systems. It also showcases the achievements of the Electoral Affairs Commission and its critical role in ensuring the optimal functioning of polling places.

The National Electoral Commission also considered the report of the Media Committee, briefing members on the proposed slogan for the next round of elections, as well as a comprehensive media work strategy for everything related to the campaign, which reflects the progress made by the Parliament, the development of the UAE and its achievements the results.

The meeting also discussed the strategy and role of the Security Council in providing all the necessary elements for the success of the elections. In addition, NEC reviewed a general report on the project to manage elections, and a special report from the Council on Intelligent Systems, which included perspectives on the voting process and how best to employ advanced technology in implementing the election process according to the highest standards.
