For Anand Sachdev, who lost his father in January 2021, the bereavement process was brutal. But in the midst of the loss, Anand turned to restraint to quell his grief.

Coping with his father’s deteriorating health while he was still alive and struggling in the hospital, Anand turned to his main line of defense as he dealt with the stress – giving up his sugar cravings and praying that when his father came back he would only touch the sweet tooth .

Anand aka Andy said: “I’ve always had a sweet tooth. I used to eat two scoops of ice cream a day. I was a prime customer at my downstairs ice cream shop. On January 15, 2021, my father was admitted to the hospital with a minor heart attack. A few days later , I promised myself that I would stop eating sweets completely until my dad came home,” said the 47-year-old Indian expat who once weighed 114kg.

While experts have repeatedly asserted that exercise is by no means a panacea, it can play a vital role in adjusting to loss. “Unfortunately, Dad passed away in the hospital and he never came home. So, from January 30, 2021 to today, I haven’t touched any candy. I think my dad is more important to me than any candy , I have sworn that I will keep this determination no matter what happens. I have given up sweets completely since then. The only sugar I get is from the fruit I eat. Dad is more important to me than candy. He gave up. I feel like even when he died, he did something good for me and went away,” he added.

Andy, a regular squash and badminton player who has even won many honors, suffered a meniscus injury in his right knee in 2016. At the time he weighed 75kg.

He told the backstory and how things went downhill from there, thinking, “I’ve been the squash captain for the Indian club team for a long time. But after the injury, I tried to get back on the field for a year and couldn’t because of the pain. Then I let myself go completely. By 2017 I went from 75kg to 114kg. I kept eating and didn’t care about exercise. Then after an operation in 2018 I tried to get back into the game, but I became very lethargic and still the same weight.”

But after the death of his father and his determination, Andy gradually began to lose weight, only to suffer another misfortune. “In December 2021, I ruptured my Achilles while playing badminton. Then I went on a three-month cast. The doctor told me it would take me six months to walk again and asked me to forget squash and badminton. I’m on crutches now. But even in orthodox boots, I decided to take 10,000 steps a day (with crutches). I was eating a very high fiber, high protein diet at the time. During that time, I lost a lot of weight. My weight went from 109 kg to down to 75kg.”

Since then, he has only insisted on embracing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and said the Dubai Fitness Challenge reinforces these efforts that ultimately benefit society and members of the community.

“I’ve taken on a new challenge…I’m trying personal training now. I want to get fitter. My body fat is currently 18-19% and I’ve decided to go down to 14-12%. I already have two or three packs Now, I’m aiming for a six pack. It’s become a way of life. I can’t put anything in my mouth that I know won’t be good for my body. My brain doesn’t allow it.”

Talking about the looming stress in people’s lives and how the 30X30 challenge can inspire communities to seek healthy and active lifestyles, he said, “People are living a stressful life these days. So, people need an outlet (initiative) like this to get rid of all This challenge allows you to stay calm and has a positive impact on your work and personal life. I think it’s an amazing move,” said the expat who grew up in the UAE.
