The UAE picked up a slew of medals at the JJIF World Youth Championships at the Jiu-Jitsu Arena on Monday.
They won 11 golds, 2 silvers and 2 bronzes, reaching a total of 64 (27g, 17s and 20b) and topping the medal table, followed by Kazakhstan (21g, 14s, 37b) and Germany (16g, 13s) , 16b) in second week of the championship.
Khaled Al Shehhi (63kg) and Omar Al Suwaidi (56kg) completed the gold doubles, winning their respective heavyweight men’s finals last week.
“The men’s champions are stronger, but that doesn’t make the U21 game any easier,” Al Shehhi said after his final victory over Israeli Amitmeir Burshtein.
“It was my dream three years ago, to win double gold at Worlds, and tonight I got it. It will be one of my fondest memories in Jiu-Jitsu.
“More importantly, I achieved these results for my country. There is no better feeling than hearing our national anthem and the flag raised during the game.”
Al Shehhi is hoping to bring the winning formula to next week’s World Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Abu Dhabi. World Pro is known to be a tougher challenge and Al Shehhi is expected to make another appearance at the Men’s Open and Abu Dhabi World Junior Championships.
“It was a fantastic night for us,” added Al Suwaidi. “In my heavyweight bout, we managed to reach the All-UAE final, which is remarkable considering the level of overseas fighters.
“But as my teammate Khalid said, we have more confidence after the men’s game enters the youth stage, which is not always easy in combat sports. I had a tough fight with Afek [Agababa of Israel] entering the finals. “
Joining Al Shehhi and Al Suwaidi in the men’s gold rush are Saeed Al Kubaisi (85kg), Mahdi Al Awlaqi (77kg), Zayed Salem (94kg) and Hazea Farhan (over 94kg).
Sharma Alkarbani A stunning victory over Canada’s Suriya Desai in the 63kg final took the UAE women to the podium.
“After winning bronze at the Women’s Open, I am very confident,” said Al Karbani, the first Emirati woman to win a medal [bronze] At the U.S. World Games in the summer, he said.
“Obviously a good day for a team where four of my teammates won gold. It’s definitely a reward for our hard work day in and day out.
“Of course, we are very fortunate to have the support of our federation and the tremendous input of technical staff in our preparations.”
Asma Al Hosani defeated Shamsa Al Ameri in the 52kg category and Hamda Al Shkeili defeated Sara Al Hammadi in the 45kg category, both finals for the UAE team. Balqees Abdulkareem (42kg) and Fakhera Al Mannsoori (70kg) went on to win gold for the hosts.
