The United Arab Emirates’ Etihad and Emirates join the top 20 most punctual airlines in the world for 2022.
According to data released by OAG, a global tourism data platform, Abu Dhabi-headquartered Etihad Airways and Emirates Airline ranked 19th and 20th, with on-time performance (OTP) of 81.14% and 81.13% respectively.
On-time performance means that the flight arrives or departs within 15 minutes of the scheduled time.
Etihad and Emirates had the lowest cancellation rates last year at 0.55% and 0.02% respectively. They are the only two Gulf airlines in the top 20 for 2022.
Over the past two years, local airlines have resumed operations in most of the destinations they served before the pandemic.
Dubai’s flag carrier currently flies to more than 130 destinations on six continents, while the Abu Dhabi-based national carrier flies to 64 cities.
Emirates’ ranking in the region has risen from fifth in 2019 to third in 2022, and globally from 34th to 20th.
Globally, Garuda Indonesia, South Africa’s Safair, Germany’s low-cost airline Eurowings, Thailand’s AirAsia and South Korea’s Jeju Air were the five most punctual airlines last year.
“Global on-time performance is reaching pre-pandemic levels as carriers work to ease operational pressures and delays. Confidence in a travel recovery is building as airlines place new aircraft orders, announce new routes and labor challenges appear to subside, said John Grant, chief analyst at OAG.
In the Middle East and Africa region, Etihad and Emirates are ranked second and third in terms of on-time performance in 2022, behind Safair. Other airlines in the top 10 include Gulf Air, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Flynas, Saudia, Oman Air and Royal Jordanian.
According to OAG, the top 10 airports in the Middle East and Africa for punctuality are Durban King Shaka International Airport, Cape Town Airport, Amman Queen Alia International Airport, Bahrain Airport, Muscat Airport, Addis Ababa Airport, Beirut Airport, Abu Dhabi International Airport, Doha Airport and Jizan Airport.
