type won 22 National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Awards The employee won Entertainment Site of the Year at an awards ceremony Sunday night at Universal Studios. These 22 trophies represent the most points scored in the event by all publications.
Also receiving top honors were Associate Music Editor Jem Aswad, who won Online Reporter of the Year, while Elizabeth Wagmeister and Clayton Davis (Elizabeth Wagmeister), co-host of “Variety Show,” was named Anchor/Host of the Year.
Fifteenth Annual Awards, presented by Los Angeles Press Club Jobs in national and local publications from July 2021 to June 2022, distributed in the Grand Ballroom of the Universal Sheraton Hotel.
The most victories went to Aswald and Chris Wellman, senior music writer and lead music critic, with four each. He was followed by chief reporter Wagmeister with three wins at the ceremony. Five staff members each received two awards: Senior Vice President Tim Gray, Music Executive Editor Shirley Halperin, Executive Editor International and Senior Writer Manori Ravindran, Senior Television Editor Brian Steinberg and features editor Marina Saval.
Other first-place winners include Chief Film Critic Peter DeBruges, Senior Awards Editor Davies, Senior Entertainment and Media Writer Matt Donnelly, Senior International Film Editor Elsa Keslaci, Associate Features Editor Janelle Reilly, associate editor Pat Saperstein, television editor Michael Schneider, social media editor Katcy Stephan and international reporter KJ Yossman. Contributors Leena Tailor and Roy Trakin also shared the top prize.
In addition to winning the Online Journalist of the Year award, Aswad also won the Music Critic Award, and the Music Personality Profile Award for the Hitmaker of the Year Jack Harlow cover story of the year. He and Halperin shared the Hard News Award for their investigation into whether Travis Scott’s staging contributed to the Astroworld Festival’s death toll.
Wellman wins for profile, essay on musicians Robert Plant and Alison Krauss reuniting for reunion album; live coverage on opening of new Bob Dylan museum in Oklahoma soft news /art; and humorous writing, satirizing how Bruce Springsteen’s newly sold publication was being used for advertising licenses.
On the occasion of the music mogul’s 90th birthday, Aswald and Wellman share their fourth win with Halperin, Tailor and Trakin.
In addition to sharing the top award for Anchor/Host, Wagmeister also won the TV Critics/Analysis Award for an article on how Wendy Williams changed daytime TV. Her third award, the Celebrity Press Award, was shared with co-writers Donnelly and Keith Lacy for an essay questioning why celebrities like Woody Allen are still celebrated at Cannes’ top hangout.
Gray, last year’s winner of Print Journalist of the Year, returned this year and won two awards: Diversity Reporting, a look back at Sidney Poitier’s legacy, and Celebrity Journalism, about Guillermo del Toro’s ” Nightmare Alley” story.
Saval’s two awards were a tribute/award for Jean-Marc Vallee and a commentary/analysis/TV on the need for better representation of adolescent mental health on screen prize.
Steinberg won soft news/television for his scoop on how David Chase resurrected “The Sopranos” for his Super Bowl car ad and commentary/analysis/television for how the upfront drives ad tech instead of TV.
Ravindran won two awards in the diversity category. One is Diversity Reporting in the Film Industry, an article about how stars are calling out the lack of diversity in the UK film/TV industry. The second award, about diversity in the TV/streaming industry, went to a story about a woman of color quitting the BBC; it was shared by her co-author Yossman.
Among the other honorees: Steph won Best News Media’s use of social media to tell or enhance the story of her work, Expanding the Kardashian Family Cover Story. Riley selected a movie/TV profile to interview M. Night Shyamalan. And Saperstein won a TV/film industry feature under 1,000 words for the series “Julia.”
Five previously announced special awards were presented to guests at the ceremony. Byron Allen Receives Impact Award, Ryan Seacrest Receives Excellence Award, Marla Gibbs Receives Legend Award, Director Jennifer Lee Receives Outstanding Storyteller In Film, Country Star Tanya Tucker received the Outstanding Storyteller Award (Music).
This Los Angeles Press Club The Awards Ceremony is held twice a year, with the SoCal Journalism Awards presented each June or July.
