Residents heard two loud bangs on Wednesday night as traditional cannons were fired at selected points around the UAE to announce the start of Ramadan.

The historic Qasr Al Hosn fort and Dubai Expo City were among several locations in the UAE where cannons were fired on Wednesday night to usher in the start of the holy month.

The sound of the cannon will echo from several locations throughout the holy month, including Dubai Expo City (in front of the iconic Al Wasl Square), near Burj Khalifa, Dubai Festival City, Madinat Jumeirah, Damac and Hatta Guest House.

The cannon will be located at the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi, Umm Al Emarat Park in Qasr Al-Hosn and Mushrif areas, and the Formula car park in Shahama City, and Zakher in Al Ain near the wedding hall and Al-Jahili The area of the fort, as well as the city of Al-Dhafra, which will be located in Adnoc Gardens.

According to some historians, the custom began in Egypt in the 10th century, when fire was fired to let people know it was time to break the fast. In Dubai, it dates back to the 1960s. The cannons are believed to have been manufactured in England in 1945.
