US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Thomas West will visit Japan, India and the United Arab Emirates from Dec. 1-8, where he will meet with the Afghan diaspora and partners, the State Department said in a statement.
West will consult with Afghans and partners on the humanitarian and economic crisis in Afghanistan, the protection of Afghans’ rights, and shared security issues.
“Special Representative West will also engage with the Afghan diaspora, including human rights, business, political and media leaders, to discuss how to address these challenges,” the statement read.
In response to West’s trip, the Islamic emirate called on Washington to lift restrictions on Afghanistan.
“They themselves created the problems that exist now — sanctions and other problems, like banking problems and the assets of the Afghan people are still frozen,” said Bilal Karimi, the deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate.
Negotiations with India, Japan and the United Arab Emirates, allies of the United States, could have a positive impact on the situation in Afghanistan, political analysts said.
“Thomas West’s visit could open a new front in international competition,” said political analyst Fazal Rahman Oriya.
“Their goal is to draw more attention to US policy in Afghanistan,” said political analyst Janat Fahim Chakari. ——Tolonews
