Winchester boss breaks down those Supernatural returns and the future of the series

[ad_1]

Warning: This article contains spoilers winchesters season one finale.

That’s how you end a season! In the season 1 finale, winchesters John (Drake Rogers) and Mary (Meg Donnelly) defeated Akrida and closed the chapter of their lives, bringing back some familiar faces, answering a lot of questions, and giving fans a sense of closure (and appreciation for hope for the future).

Within hours, of which there are supernaturalBobby (jim beaver), Jack (Alexander Calvert) and Dean (Jason Ackles), the show answers the biggest question surrounding the series: that the story takes place in a larger supernatural timeline? As Dean explains in the episode, he was in Paradise waiting for his brother to join him on his coach when he took a detour and was caught.

That detour took him to an alternate universe, and he wanted the Winchesters to have a happy ending. (He even gave John and Mary his hunting journal and Colt pistol in the hope that he would help them achieve their goal.)

EW interviewed Winchester Showrunner Robbie Thompson on crafting an ending that could serve as the end of the series if the show isn’t renewed, but could also serve as a supernatural universe.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Well, thanks for reminding me of my emotional instability, because the moment Dean said “Sam,” I started crying.

Robbie Thompson: Both you and me! I was in tears writing it, but on that day, that person grabbed me. Everyone made this joke on set, and I’ll continue to make it: Everyone was like, “Wow, that Jensen guy is talented. I think he’s going to go somewhere.” [Laughs] We’ve always known this scene was coming. We’ve always wanted this moment. But he is such a special actor. And I don’t think I realize how much I miss Dean Winchester, but he’s there. We obviously had him in the pilot, but we didn’t even have a mic for his voice. This is teasing, this is the real scene.

Not only did you reveal that this happened after Dean died, but it was John and Mary from another world! How did you come up with that story?

When we first talked about it, the original core idea was just: young John and Mary.Like, “Okay, we like this, but how will it work?” We don’t want to do anything that will upend the past, the present, and most importantly, the future supernatural. This sounds very limiting at first, but it’s actually very freeing. I’m looking at my old notes and it’s clear even from the initial conversation that there are many different ways to get into this space. But when we start thinking about multiverse paths, it does something for us.apparently it left supernatural The universe is intact. So whenever the boys, I’m fully confident they’ll be wearing boots again – the question is when, not if – they’ll be able to wear that shoe without any hindrance. That’s important. And then it also gives us the space to tell the story for Mary and John, but through Dean’s lens.

So we wanted to find out: What is the emotional story we can tell for him? We have two pockets that can exist.one after chuck [Rob Benedict]before Dean’s untimely death, but that didn’t really work because I was just like, “Okay, okay, where’s Sam [Jared Padalecki]”And when he’s in heaven, when he goes for a drive, it feels like we have space to play between when he gets into the Baby and the drive to meet Sam. That feels like the richest, most fertile place we live in. You What to reflect on at the end of life? What in the supernatural universe/multiverse might you want to see? And then, you know, Dean will be Dean. [Laughs] He couldn’t help it. They say in the episode: Even in death, the hunter keeps hunting.

I like the idea that this could be a universe where the Winchesters get a happy ending. I want to see this!

The show talks a lot about this cycle of violence, this cycle of trauma that is passed on from generation to generation. If you had this opportunity that Dean had, besides saving the multiverse and obviously saving his brother, was able to push his parents in that direction, which is why he didn’t tell them his name and the whole truth at the end. He didn’t want to Make them think all roads lead to a 1967 Chevrolet Impala. They must tell their own stories. That felt like a place where we could tell Dean’s story, and in the process, open the door to tell more stories with Mary and John and our incredible cast of characters.

Well, having said that, I know I’m taking it too far, but theoretically, does that mean, if you were able to continue the story, we’d end up with a different version of Sam and Dean?

100% of. There are also different versions of the characters that we’ve seen before, probably with different parts of the cast.I’ve been telling my friends who worked since the beginning supernaturalI was like, “Let me just watch episode 13, and then we’ll blow the door down.” [Laughs] We have many different options. But look, I’ll tell you, I know how I want this series to end, and we can do a lot of story in this corner supernatural universe. Yes, you’ll end up seeing versions of Sam and Dean, of course, if those two kids survive the torture we give them. [Laughs]

There’s that beautiful montage at the end of the episode. Since none of you know your own fate, do you feel the need to include this as a potential series finale as well?

Yes, 100%. Montage is not scripted. We were in New Orleans, shooting towards the end, and our production supervisor, John Showalter, agreed very strongly, I would say, we very much agreed that we needed to see the cars move. We want to see kids on the road. But watching them, this movie popped into my head, this Steven Soderbergh movie called Brit. There is an editing technique where he just pops up in a different timeline. I thought, “We want to see these kids one more time to really solidify this moment.” It was definitely designed that way.

That’s basically always been the story we wanted to tell. I want the audience to know that this Akrida plot line and the Dean mystery are one chapter, and that chapter is coming to an end. You want that sense of emotionally having more stories to tell, and who knows what’s going to happen down the road with these two crazy kids and all of our characters, but I feel like our audience is already on that journey, They deserve some closure, too, and at least room to play if we’re so lucky down the road. We did wonder, “Should we just let them go another 10 feet and then get them into a horrible car crash and then actually have a pullback?” [Laughs]

It feels like this show and this story opened more doors than closed.

We really think that if we do it the right way, you can really open supernatural There are many stories in the universe. There’s still plenty of story to tell, and death never stops these characters.
