washington [US]June 7 (ANI): Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced his second presidential bid on Tuesday, tying former President Donald Trump, the Republican frontrunner and Christie’s longtime support, CNN reported. Another conflict ensued.

His announcement Tuesday night came a day after New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, a moderate Republican, decided not to run and less than 24 hours before former Vice President Mike Pence formally entered the race.

He then held a campaign kickoff at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire, home to the second-earliest race on the 2024 primary calendar, after the Iowa caucuses.

Christie, like Trump, will try to appeal to traditionally more conservative and establishment-friendly Republicans, hoping to become Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in a crowded field, according to CNN. counterbalancing force.

Christie challenged viewers to be “big” rather than “little” and drew on the example of successive U.S. leaders, from Democrat John F. Kennedy to Republican Abraham Lincoln.

In addition to the two, others who have announced bids include former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott. Pence, who has filed candidacy papers, and North Dakota Gov. Doug Bulgum are expected to join the campaign on Wednesday.

As CNN previously reported, Christie believes he is best positioned to take on Trump in the primary while appealing to independents in a potential general election showdown with President Joe Biden. He’s starting his campaign with the backing of a new super PAC called Tell It Like It Is, a group of allies looking forward to his campaign, according to CNN.

Christie’s interest in presidential politics began in 2011 when he considered running in the primary to take on then-President Barack Obama a year later. He dissented, then saw his standing among Republicans decline by 2016. His 2016 campaign was short-lived, most memorably when Christie mocked the guts of Florida Sen. Marco Rubio during a February debate.

Both eventually dropped out, with Christie finishing sixth in the New Hampshire primary and endorsing Trump.

But Christie went a step further. He led Trump’s transition team, and though his work was ultimately undermined, Christie himself was sidelined in the days after the election and later became a close adviser to the former president. He had been nominated for a number of executive positions, none of which materialized. He even participated in a mock debate with Trump in 2020, according to CNN.

After Trump’s defeat and subsequent attempt to overturn the 2020 election, Christie turned on him and tried to establish herself as one of Trump’s leading Republican critics.

“We’ve been losing, losing, losing,” Christie said late last year at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual leadership conference. “The reason we failed was Donald Trump put himself before everyone else.”

He also said Trump “incited” the Jan. 6, 2021, riots at the U.S. Capitol “to intimidate Mike Pence and Congress into doing what he said last week: overthrow the election.”

In an interview with Axios this year, he vowed never to support Trump again.

Christie was first elected governor of New Jersey in 2009, replacing Democratic incumbent Gov. Jon Corzin. He easily won re-election in blue states in 2013. He served as U.S. attorney for New Jersey from 2002 to 2008, during which time he successfully prosecuted the father of Trump’s son-in-law and former aide Jared Kushner on criminal tax evasion and, according to CNN. Net reports that witnesses tampered with the allegations.

Christie himself was embroiled in the “Bridgegate” scandal during his second term as governor. Emails and text messages from top aides show massive traffic jams caused by lane closures on the George Washington Bridge in September 2013 amid political animosity following the town’s Democratic mayor’s refusal to support Christie’s reelection as governor.

A federal investigation determined that Christie knew nothing about the decision to close the driveway, but the scandal still follows the former governor. (Arnie)
