DAYTON, March 27 (AP) Authorities say an early morning fire has gutted a commercial complex that houses a historic airplane factory founded Sunday by the Wright brothers in Ohio group.

The Dayton Fire Department was called to the scene just before 2:30 a.m. and found the entire complex on fire. Firefighters sprayed water on the flames with hoses and used aerial ladders to inject water into openings in the roof.

The Dayton Daily News reported that crews were still on the scene nearly 12 hours after the fire broke out. Black smoke continued to rise from multiple hangar buildings, including the historic Wright Brothers Aircraft Works hangar, and flames could be seen on the back of the hangar, the newspaper reported.

Capt. Brad French said in a release that the building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was the first aircraft factory built by the Wright brothers.

Mackensie Wittmer, executive director of the National Aviation Heritage District, said in a Facebook post that the group is “deeply saddened by the fire that destroyed our historic Wright Aircraft Factory, which was originally built by the aviation industry. buildings.” Wittmer said officials were working to assess the damage.

The Wright Brothers founded the Wright Company in November 1909 and produced about 120 aircraft of 13 different models, according to the National Aviation Heritage District. The group has been working to preserve and restore the plant as part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park, “to complete the story of the Wright Brothers’ invention, development and commercialization of the airplane in Dayton,” officials said.

A year ago, city officials authorized more than $1.4 million to clean up the Wright factory site as the city partnered with the National Park Service to create a museum in the hangar space. In 2019, both hangars were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and damage estimates have not been released. (Associated Press)
