Paris [France]July 9 (ANI): France has banned the sale, possession and transport of fireworks in anticipation of possible violence over the upcoming Bastille Day weekend, CNN reported Sunday (local time).

In late June, a police officer shot and killed a 17-year-old, sparking violent unrest that swept the country, during which protesters were seen setting off fireworks.

CNN reported, citing a decree published by French state media, that “in order to prevent the risk of serious public disturbances during the 14th of July celebrations, the sale, carriage, transport and use of pyrotechnic products are prohibited throughout France. and fireworks until and including July 15”. Tensions have risen after a teenager was shot dead by police in a country that has recently shocked France, with protesters erecting barricades in French streets, setting fire to and firing fireworks at police officers.

The developments came after a 17-year-old teenager, Nal, died after he was pulled over for a traffic violation in the Paris suburb of Nanterre. The officer accused of shooting him has been jailed.

Video of the incident, filmed by a bystander, showed two officers standing next to the driver of the car, with one of them shooting the driver, although he did not appear to be in any immediate danger, CNN reported.

Nanterre prosecutor Pascal Prache said the officer said he opened fire because he feared the boy might run over someone with his car.

The officer is currently facing a formal investigation into manslaughter and has been placed in preliminary custody.
