New Delhi [India]March 2 (ANI): Over the past few decades, India-Germany relations have seen some major developments in different areas.

The two countries have been strengthening their relationship through various partnerships in areas such as defense cooperation, productive labor migration, energy security, and trade and investment.

The visit of German Chancellor Olaf Schulz to India also cemented their mutual desire to further cooperate in the fields of politics, economy, security and defence.

The prime minister was also accompanied by senior officials and a business delegation during his visit, which included chief executives of major companies such as Siemens and SAP, as well as heads of the country’s small and medium enterprises association.

Germany is India’s largest trading partner in the EU and one of India’s largest sources of foreign direct investment.

The country now also hopes to renew its engagement with the countries of the global south by starting to reach out to major emerging economies, with India being one of the first destinations of such efforts.

What’s more, Berlin’s outreach clearly fits with the massive fact that bilateral trade between the two countries has grown to $24.8 billion in FYI-22 alone.

It was also an important point of discussion during the leaders’ meeting, drawing renewed attention to the importance of strengthening trade and defense ties between the two countries.

Other key areas under consideration during the meeting include German investments in India in sectors such as transport, chemicals, services and automobiles, given the growing opportunities India brings to the global economy.

Scholz’s visit also comes in the context of the German foreign minister’s visit to the country in December 2022, when the two foreign ministers sign a mobility partnership agreement that will enable people to study and work in each other’s countries.

The German chancellor also said that the main goal of his visit is to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries on matters of international importance, including economic transformation in both countries, climate change mitigation and striving for a sustainable future.

Mutual cooperation in these areas also has the potential to open up new avenues for cooperation between the two countries in areas such as pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, and strengthening the digital economy, among other initiatives that could be pursued.

Talks to strengthen a free trade agreement between the EU and India were also discussed, with both leaders noting the importance of such an agreement to jointly advance the economic interests of both countries.

In addition, in order to strengthen defense cooperation, the German delegation also emphasized the promotion of a US$5.2 billion agreement between the two countries to jointly build six conventional submarines off the coast of India.

If launched, the proposal will not only enhance New Delhi’s naval capabilities but also introduce it to the latest technological advancements achieved in naval capacity building measures.

The recently concluded visit has also given a significant boost to the relationship between the two countries into defense and bilateral security services.

With the strengthening of the relationship, the defense and security domain has become a high priority area, which provides room for further strengthening of the defense relationship, including industry cooperation, while also strengthening the overall structure of defense and security cooperation.

More importantly, however, the top leaders of the two countries have also played an invaluable role in concretizing relations beyond specific sectors and in various ways reinvigorating entrenched ties.

The now-concluded visit is a testament to that same commitment, underscoring the mutual trust between the two great powers.

The emerging potential to enhance untapped growth for development is ample, if not only between the EU and India, between the two emerging nations of the world.

Therefore, both Berlin and New Delhi are wise enough to realize and make better use of this potential, thereby guaranteeing cooperation between the two countries. While there are still some minor hurdles, they must be addressed through the right channels to calm any discomfort that may arise from either party.

Both Germany and India are on the path to reshaping the global order; in particular, their commitment to reshaping multilateral institutions, and their efforts to revamp them with the G4.

Therefore, it is not only in the interests of both countries, but also in the greater interest of the international community, for these two emerging countries, which share common values, to work together to promote the development of the entire region.

The German Chancellor’s recently concluded visit is therefore a step in the right direction, broadening the avenues and fields for joint development of two of the most aspiring countries in the current world order and thus also raising the prospect of a louder voice . The same is true for matters involving their vital interests. (Arnie)
