World News | Mercedes to build its own EV charging network »

[ad_1]

LAS VEGAS (USA), Jan. 5 (AP) Mercedes-Benz said it will build its own global electric vehicle charging network, starting in North America, to compete with electric vehicle sales leader Tesla Inc. compete.

The German luxury automaker said Thursday at the CES gadget show in Las Vegas that it will start building the North American network this year at a total cost of just over 1 billion euros ($1.05 billion).

When completed in six to seven years, the network will have 400 charging stations and more than 2,500 high-power plugs, the company said.

A network in Europe, China and other markets will follow, completing the entire network by the end of the decade, when the company intends to sell all electric vehicles depending on market conditions.

Ola Källenius, chairman of the Mercedes-Benz Board of Management, told reporters that the entire network will have more than 2,000 charging stations and more than 10,000 plugs around the world.

The Mercedes-branded network will be open to all EV owners, but Mercedes owners will be able to reserve charging ports and receive priority charging over other brands, the company said.

The move will help the company compete with Tesla, which says on its website it has 40,000 charging ports worldwide.

Tesla’s network is mostly exclusive to Tesla owners, though Chief Executive Elon Musk has said there are plans to open it up to other brands. The network gives Tesla a competitive advantage over other EV brands, which must rely on a patchwork network of private charging stations.

Each Mercedes station will have between four and 12 ports, with a charging power of up to 350 kilowatts. Mercedes will share the cost of the North American network equally with MN8 Energy, the large-scale solar and battery storage operator and partner of US EV charging network provider ChargePoint.

Mercedes chief technology officer Markus Schäfer said the network would address customer concerns about not having enough range to reach their destination and find an available charging station.

While developing other charging networks, “we thought we had to go further and take the initiative here and create a global Mercedes-Benz network for our brand,” Schaeffer said.

Charging centers will be built in major cities and population centers, close to major roads and close to retail businesses and restaurants. Some will be at participating Mercedes dealerships, the company said. “We know where our customers are in North America, and we know where we sell electric vehicles,” Schäfer said.

Schäfer said the station would be in a safe, well-lit location, “not next to a dumpster somewhere in the backyard of a shopping mall.” (AP)
