[ad_1]

St. Petersburg (United States), Nov. 27 (AP) — A police officer shot and killed a man early Sunday during a health check at a St. Petersburg house, officials said.

Just before 4 a.m. on Sunday, St. Petersburg police received a report of a hit-and-run. Police at the scene found the bumper of the suspect’s car with the license plate still attached, according to a news release from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Police checked the license plate and found it was registered to a woman who lived in an apartment in St. Petersburg. They went to the address and tried to get in touch with the owner, but no one answered.

Eventually they got in touch with the owner, who is now living in an assisted living home. She told investigators she was worried about her son, who lives in the apartment.

They returned to the apartment just after 6 a.m. on Sunday and tried to speak to 63-year-old Gus Spanoudis, the report said.

With the assistance of the St. Petersburg Fire Department, officers forced their way into the apartment and found Spanudis in a back bedroom.

Detectives said Spanudis made a suicide statement and pointed a gun at Officer Jace Morrow. The officer repeatedly gave orders to drop the gun, but Spanudis did not do so, the news release said.

The officer then shot Spanoudis, who was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The shooting is being investigated by the Pinellas County Use of Deadly Force Investigation Task Force, which was formed in 2020 to ensure that investigations into use of force incidents are thorough, complete and objective.

Morrow will be placed without duty until the investigation is complete. (Associated Press)
