Brackenridge (United States), Jan. 3 (AP) — Police recovered from a man after he chased and shot a western Pennsylvania police chief and wounded two other officers, authorities said. Five guns were found.

The police chief and another officer were shot and killed Monday in Brackenridge, an Allegheny County borough northeast of Pittsburgh, authorities said. The suspect was later shot dead in Pittsburgh after crashing a hijacked vehicle and exchanging fire with police, authorities said.

State Attorney General Josh Shapiro, the governor-elect, said slain Brackenridge Police Chief Justin McIntire “ran towards danger to keep Pennsylvanias safe — and he made the ultimate sacrifice in service to community.” A second officer was injured in the leg and is in stable condition, A third officer was suspected to have been hit by shrapnel.

After a brief chase, the car crashed in the city’s Homewood-Brushton neighborhood and Swan fled again on foot into the woods.

When officers established the boundary, Swan left the wooded area and ran into a residential area, shooting officers as he fled, police said. Swan fired another shot, and the officers returned fire. Swan was pronounced dead at the scene. A Pittsburgh officer suffered minor injuries, believed to be from shrapnel, police said.

Five guns believed to have been used by Swan in the case were recovered, four in Brackenridge and one in Homewood-Brushton, police said. Allegheny County Police will investigate the suspect’s shooting and turn over the findings to the county’s district attorney, authorities said.

Dozens of police cars were parked on the southbound lanes of Route 28 Monday night as a team of officers took McIntyre’s remains to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office. Dozens of officials from departments across the county lined the streets of Pittsburgh as the parade passed, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

“He will be greatly missed, there’s no question about that,” Fire Chief Rick Jones said of McIntyre on Monday night, according to the Post, noting that McIntyre was in the area. District grew up.
