MOSCOW/NEW DELHI, Feb. 8 (PTI) The head of BrahMos Aerospace said on Wednesday that the India-Russia defense partnership will “never” be interrupted by Western sanctions against Moscow, saying it is precisely this partnership The “trust” that makes it work.

Western countries led by the United States have imposed severe sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

BrahMos Aerospace is an Indian-Russian joint venture that specializes in nuclear-capable hypersonic missiles.

The company currently produces the BrahMos missile and is currently developing the BrahMos II hypersonic cruise missile.

Atul Dinkar Rane, managing director and chief executive of BrahMos Aerospace Indo-Russian Joint Venture, told Russia’s official news agency TASS that the Western attempt would not stop the Russian-Indian defense partnership, nor would it affect the company’s operations. “My personal gut feeling — never!” Raney said when asked whether the West could stop India-Russia defense and security cooperation.

“If anyone tries, he will only fail. The relationship between Indian scientists and Russian technologists is now so deep, it is impossible to break it. Even if we are told by law – stop talking to Russia, you will start talking to other people – — but we always say that it is easier to cooperate with the Russians,” TASS quoted him as saying.

Trust between India and Russia will help the partnership work despite Western sanctions, Raney asserted.

“The trust that we’ve built between the two partners, … that trust is enough for us to work and we’re trying to move forward — despite all these sanctions,” Rane said.

Russia has historically been India’s main arms supplier.

Unlike many other major Western powers, India did not directly criticize Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and abstained from voting on the UN platform to condemn Russia’s aggression.

India has been pressing for a resolution to the crisis through diplomacy and dialogue.

Lane also said that many foreign countries have expressed interest in purchasing various versions of the BrahMos cruise missile.

“The Philippines is the first order we got,” Lane said, adding that five countries have placed orders so far.

“So far, I can tell they are from Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.”

He added that BrahMos Aerospace plans to start delivering missiles to the Philippines in the middle or second half of this year.
