TOKYO, July 10 (AP) — At least six people were missing on Monday as heavy rains hit southwestern Japan, triggering flooding and mudslides.

Since the weekend, rain in Kyushu and China has caused many rivers to flood, mudslides, road closures, train interruptions, and water supply interruptions in some areas.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued an emergency heavy rain warning for Fukuoka and Oita prefectures in southern Kyushu, urging residents in riverside and hillside areas to remain vigilant. More than 1.7 million residents of vulnerable areas were urged to shelter.

The Fire and Disaster Management Authority said at least six people were missing.

In Sota Town, Fukuoka Prefecture, two people were buried by mudslides. One of them was rescued, but the other was found without vital signs, the agency said. Additional information about their conditions was not immediately available.

In Karatsu city, Saga prefecture, rescuers were searching for three people whose houses were hit by mudslides, the agency said.

Three others are missing elsewhere in the area.
