Up-and-coming Ayesha Almutaiwei claimed two bronze medals for the hosts, the UAE, as Fazza’s individual competition at the 12th Para Weightlifting World Cup Dubai 2022 came to an end on Sunday.
Almutaiwei managed to lift 66kg, finishing third in the best weightlifting category behind Brazil’s Marcia Cristina Menezes (116kg) and South Korea’s Sunjeong Choe (103kg).
In the total weightlifting category, the Emirati finished third with a total of 126kg behind South Korea and Brazil.
However, the 16-year-old won best rookie and overall gold medals for her efforts.
At the end of individual events, Brazil topped the elite medal table with 11 medals (including 5 golds), followed by Iran and Jordan with 5 and 3 golds respectively. The UAE ranks 11th with four medals, including a silver.
Otherwise, Saturday’s evening session at the People of Determined Club in Dubai was dominated by Iran.
In the men’s 107kg event, Iranian Alikbar Gharibshahi (Aliakbar Gharibshahi) set a new world record with his outstanding performance and won the gold medal.
Gharibshahi lifted 254kg in his last lift, breaking his own record by 1kg. In the process, he also stunned Tokyo 2020 Paralympic champion Sodnompiljee Enkhbayar from Mongolia in the 250kg category.
Meanwhile, Iranian weightlifters finished first or second in the men’s over 107kg category.
Ahmad Aminzadeh won the gold medal for best lift and total (772) with 265kg, while fellow lifter Mahdi Sayadi won with 238 Kilograms won second place.
Some 200 lifters from 40 countries took part in the final World Para Powerlifting World Cup of the season, joining Paralympic and world stars in a star-studded line-up.
The event, which concluded on Sunday, provided a vital world ranking for qualifying for the Paris 2022 Paralympic Games.
