UAE takes crackdown on cybercrime seriously

The Abu Dhabi Department of Justice (ADJD), in partnership with ‘Majalis’ Abu Dhabi, Office of Citizen and Community Affairs, Presidential Court, held an awareness-raising lecture on ‘Cybercrime and its dangers to society’. right direction.

Chief Prosecutor Dr. Abdulla Hamad Al Mansouri delivered a presentation on the nature and definition of cybercrime, the dangers of cyber-extortion and the sanctions imposed by law.

The lecturer also highlighted the reasons and factors that lead members of society to become victims of cyber extortion, and showed a set of practical examples based on cases handled by the public prosecution agency.

Dr. Al Mansouri also discussed the risks associated with the misuse of social media networks and the responsibilities of users in accordance with Federal Decree No. 34 of 2021 on combating rumours, and cybercrime. Federal Decree No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Rumors and Cybercrime came into effect on January 2, 2022.

It aims to improve the level of protection against online crimes committed through the use of information technology, networks and platforms. It further seeks to protect government websites and databases in the UAE, combat the spread of rumors and fake news, guard against electronic fraud and uphold privacy and individual rights.

This is not the first time Abu Dhabi’s Justice Department has highlighted the dangers of cybercrime. Last July, the ADJD organized two lectures on “Cybercrime and its risks to society” to ensure society is free from crime using modern technology, especially through the widespread use of social media. Dubai Police General Directorate has called on the public to be vigilant when using social media platforms and not to fall prey to cybercriminals and scammers. The remarks were made by Specialist Major General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigations at Dubai Police, who revealed details of the “Shadow” operation nearly three years ago that resulted in 20 African gangs caught extortion and cyber extortion crimes and fraudulent activities targeting social media users. He also said police had arrested a married couple who were posing as a domestic helper recruitment agency to defraud social media users.

The Deputy Commander-in-Chief of SP stressed the importance of raising awareness of cybercrime, which is a global challenge given the increasing use of technology in all spheres of life.
