Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) recently performed a total hip replacement using a minimally invasive approach on a patient with severe necrosis of the femoral head.
Osteonecrosis of the hip occurs when the blood supply to the femoral head is interrupted, causing bone tissue to die, resulting in disabling arthritis. The surgery involves applying a highly complex orthopedic surgical approach known as the direct anterior approach to the hip. The hospital’s medical team, one of the largest in the UAE, is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi Health Services (Seha) and the Mayo Clinic, using a special hip anterior distraction table to help safely perform the procedure.
“The patient suffered from osteonecrosis of the femoral head in his hip and had been in excruciating pain for many years, seriously affecting his daily life and quality of life. Therefore, we opted for an anterior hip replacement, which involved a small incision so that we can remove the damaged bone and insert the hip implant without injuring the muscles and tendons around the hip joint,” said Dr Mohamed Muath Adi, SSMC Consultant Orthopedic Surgery and Acting Chairman of the Orthopedic Surgery Division.
“Although minimally invasive, hip replacement through the direct anterior hip approach requires the use of advanced equipment and meticulous surgical technique, both of which are offered at SSMC,” he added.
With the global re-selection of the direct anterior hip approach as the method requiring hip arthroplasty, the technique offers a range of advantages including faster recovery, reduced risk of post-operative dislocation and minimal damage to the hip muscles, reducing the number of surgeries accepted Patient’s pain during surgery.
Patient Omar Albalooshi expressed his relief and gratitude after the two-hour operation was successfully completed.

The patient was released from the hospital two days after the surgery and will continue with his rehabilitation program, which includes rehabilitation periods and physical therapy sessions to regain mobility and adjust to the hip replacement.
