George Town [Guyana]23rd April (ANI): Foreign Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called on Prime Minister Mark Phillips of Guyana and discussed energy, resilience and defense cooperation.

Jaishankar tweeted on Sunday: “Great meeting Guyana Prime Minister Mark Phillips. Discussed Energy, Disaster Resilience and Collaboration in Disaster Preparedness & Defense. India will be partnering with Guyana on its development journey.”

Earlier, Jaishankar co-chaired the fifth India-Guyana Joint Commission meeting with Guyana Foreign Minister Hugh Todd for “comprehensive discussions” on agriculture, energy, health and medicine, and defense cooperation.

“Co-chaired the 5th India-Guyana Joint Committee meeting this afternoon with Minister of Foreign Affairs Hugh Todd. Full discussion on development etc.,” EAM Jaishankar tweeted.

“Witnessed the exchange of agreements on immigration and mobility and air connectivity. Encourage our officials to continue to engage closely and foster stronger business-to-business relationships,” Jaishankar further tweeted.

On Saturday, Jaishankar met with the President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali.

“It was a pleasure to visit Guyana President Ilfaan Ali and Vice President Bharat Jagdeo at the State Assembly. Conveying personal and warm greetings from Prime Minister @narendramodi. Their recent visit to India has given new impetus to our relationship ,” EAM tweeted.

He also said it was natural to discuss cricket when visiting Guyana, a country he called the land of Rohan Kanhai and Lance Gibbs.

In addition, Jaishankar celebrated Earth Day and planted a tree during his visit to Guyana.

“Celebrate Earth Day in Georgetown by planting a Simarupa tree in this beautiful country. May this sapling thrive and reflect the strength and vitality of the Indo-Guyana relationship,” the minister tweeted.

Jaishankar also met Alva Baptiste from Saint Lucia in Guyana and expressed his appreciation for his insights at the Indo-CARICOM ministerial meeting in Guyana on Friday.

Beginning on April 21, Foreign Minister Jaishankar is visiting four countries in Central America and Latin America.

Following his visit to Guyana, Jaishankar will visit Panama tomorrow for a two-day visit from April 24-25. He will visit the top leadership and be hosted by Foreign Minister Janaina Tewaney Mencomo. During this visit, there will also be an India-SICA foreign ministers meeting where he will meet representatives of the eight-nation System of Central American Integration (SICA).

After completing its visit to Panama, EAM will depart for Colombia and the Dominican Republic. (Arnie)
