A high-profile pro-Taliban cleric and civilian were killed on Friday in an explosion outside a mosque in the western city of Herat, in what authorities said was an attack.
“Mujib Rahman Ansari and some of his guards and civilians were killed on their way to the mosque,” Herat police spokesman Mahmoud Rasouli said.
Rasori did not say how many casualties were caused by the explosion.
Al Jazeera media network, citing unnamed sources, said 14 people had been killed.
In a tweet, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid expressed “strong condolences” over Ansari’s death and said those who attacked him would be punished.
Mujib Rahman Ansari made strong remarks at a large gathering of thousands of scholars and elders organized by the Taliban in late June, condemning anyone who opposed the Taliban government.
The Taliban say they have improved security in the country since taking power about a year ago, but there have been several bombings in recent months, some targeting busy mosques during prayers. The United Nations has expressed concern over the growing number of attacks, with a local affiliate of the Islamic State claiming some bombings.
There was no immediate claim to responsibility for Friday’s blast.

The airline cancelled 800 flights from Germany on Friday and warned that disruptions could continue over the weekend. Lufthansa pilots began a planned 24-hour strike shortly after midnight on Friday. It forced airlines to cancel 800 flights, affecting some 130,000 passengers. Swissair, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings, all subsidiaries of Lufthansa, are not expected to be affected by the strike. The company said their schedule will remain the same.
