Chapter 4 is a triumph for Lionsgate

In a business that lives and dies by sequels, maybe it’s about ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ Has an Exciting Opening Weekend” (Lionsgate) is the third time in four weeks that a sequel has done better than its predecessor.

“Wick 4” debuted at $73.5 million, well ahead of the earlier strong starts of “Creed 3” (MGM) and “Scream 6” (Paramount). This is by far the best initial shot in the “Wick” series. It’s a welcome return for Lionsgate, which has thrived over the past few years with sprawling franchises like “The Twilight Saga” and “The Hunger Games.”

It’s their biggest movie since the last “The Hunger Games” in 2015. The company was a great addition to pre-Covid theater revenues. But since 2019’s Knives Out, their highest-grossing before that was Jesus Revolution at $49 million (still in theaters).

In addition to the record-setting debut, “Wick 4” also had the best Cinemascore (A), Metacritic results (78) and best screen quality (1,697). It added another $64 million in overseas investment, ranking first among all 71 regions.

Even better, with an estimated production budget of $100 million, it has a lower bar to profitability than many franchises. Its PVOD pre-orders are a testament to its multi-platform potential: it briefly hit #1 on iTunes this weekend.

The performance is similar to the success of another R-rated action movie, “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Its 2o15 release grossed $45 million, and more than that is impressive.

Reported audience statistics show a dominant audience of non-white males aged 18-34. That bodes well for Universal’s upcoming “Fast X,” which hits theaters May 19.

“Wick 4” accounted for 62 percent of the weekend’s $117 million total. No other film has grossed more than $10 million. The biggest blame fell on “Shazam! Wrath of the Gods” (Warner Bros. Discovery Channel), which fell 68% in its second weekend after a poor start. The DC Comics title is looking for a domestic gross of just under $70 million.

The latest “Scream” and “Creed” entries followed with drops affected by “Wick 4” strength. “Creed 6” is set to hit a franchise-best $160 million domestically, while “Scream 6” will top $100 million.

The weekend totals put the 2023 year-to-date about 27% ahead of last year, roughly in line with recent weeks. If this continues, total domestic revenue will reach around $9.4 billion by 2023. Our rolling four-week comparison to the same date in the most recent pre-Covid period is at 69%.

Three new films opened in hundreds of theaters this weekend. Zach Braff’s “The Good Guys” (MGM) with Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman managed $834,000 across 530 theaters. Stephen Frears’ “The Lost King” (IFC) with Sally Hawkins grossed $575,000 in 753.

Several critically acclaimed games have fair platform openings. The Dardennes Brothers’ “Tori and Lokita” (Sideshow/Janus) grossed $15,600 from two theaters. “Park Namjoon: The Moon Is the Oldest Television” (Greenwich) scooped the best documentary of the year at the New York Film Forum with $10,378. “MUBI,” also opening at a New York theater, grossed $8,666. “Everything Everywhere All On Once” (A24), now in its second year, added another $445,000.
