At least 20 people were killed and 15 others injured when a bus overturned on the Pan American Highway in southwestern Colombia on Saturday, police said.
The bus was traveling between the port city of Tumaco, in Colombia’s southwest corner, and Cali, 200 miles (320 kilometers) northeast, at the time of the accident.
“Unfortunately, we had 20 deaths,” said Albertland Agudelo, captain of the Narino Divisional Traffic Police.
Among the injured were a three-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy.
Investigators are looking into a possible “mechanical failure of the braking system,” Colonel Oscar Lamprea, the region’s transportation director, said in a message to reporters.
Initial reports said the driver lost control after exiting the bend in the foggy area.
It took police and fire department rescuers nine hours to bring the vehicle upright, evacuate the wounded and rescue the dead.
Images obtained by AFP showed the bus, with its roof collapsed, parked dangerously on the edge of a steep descent.
