[ad_1]

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (Enec) has announced the successful completion of Unit 3 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi.

Once fully operational, the facility will provide up to 25 percent of the UAE’s electricity needs without generating any carbon emissions, while freeing up natural gas resources equivalent to billions of dollars, it said.

The milestone was celebrated at a major ceremony attended by President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol at the Barakah factory in the Al Dhafra area of Abu Dhabi.

Once fully operational, the Barakah plant will provide sufficient clean and reliable electricity 24 hours a day to power the UAE’s industry and more than half a million homes, and support the UAE’s strategy to become a net LNG exporter by 2030, the statement said. Enec.

As the country looks forward to hosting COP28, the Barakah facility prevents millions of tonnes of carbon emissions each year while helping to meet growing energy demand.

The presidential visit is in line with the existing special strategic partnership efforts between the UAE and South Korea, with a number of government-level agreements recently signed.

The two leaders then visited the Barakah Power Plant, which produces clean, zero-emission electricity to sustainably power the UAE.

They also witnessed the continued operation of Units 1 and 2, the completion of Unit 3 and Unit 4 as they accelerate the UAE’s clean energy transition and generate the 24/7 carbon-free baseload electricity the UAE needs to complement its renewable energy projects Progress has been made towards achieving net zero emissions by 2050, Enec said.

They praised the extraordinary achievements of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, the first civilian nuclear power plant in the Arab world and the largest source of clean electricity in the region, for more than a decade.

During the inspection, the leaders met with the team working in Barakah, where nuclear energy experts from the UAE and South Korea worked side by side with experts from around the world.

Sheikh Mohammed said that bilateral cooperation in a number of key areas, including nuclear energy, plays a vital role in supporting international efforts to achieve global energy security and promote sustainable development.

“The relationship between the UAE and South Korea has been continuously strengthened through a decade-long collaboration to develop the Barakah nuclear power plant. In 2009, the UAE prioritized energy security while accelerating a rapid transition to clean energy through the use of civilian nuclear energy ,” he added.

Yin Xiyeol said in his speech that two of the Barakah nuclear fleets are in operation and the other two will be put into operation soon, which is a huge milestone because it represents the special strategic partnership between the two countries.

“Building on our mutual success as partners at Barakah, and leveraging the excellent nuclear expertise and experience of the Korean team, now is the time to take our partnership to the next level with more collaboration in the UAE and a Progress is being made in three areas of national nuclear markets together,” he noted.

He added: “I hope my visit marks a watershed moment in our comprehensive and strategic energy partnership, which will expand beyond nuclear energy to include hydrogen, renewable energy and carbon capture and storage.”trade arab news agency
