Nepal Rescue Operation Intensifies After Deadly Floods
Rescue teams in Nepal are intensifying their search for hundreds of people still missing after devastating floods and landslides struck the country on August 26.
The disaster, believed to have been triggered by a glacier collapse, has killed at least 1,380 people in Nepal and Tibet, while more than 5,500 remain missing, according to the latest reports.
Rescuers are now focusing heavily on hydropower sites, where around 900 workers are believed to be missing. Officials say at least 121 people could still be trapped inside tunnels, raising hopes that more survivors may be found.
Recent rescues have provided a small sign of hope. A Chinese worker and several others have been pulled alive from damaged tunnel sites after spending days trapped underground. Rescue teams are using heavy equipment and specialist techniques to clear mud, rocks and debris.
International teams from countries including India, China, South Korea and the United States are assisting Nepal with the search operation. Authorities have also requested additional equipment and supplies to support the difficult rescue effort.
Nepal observed a national day of mourning on September 7 as families continued to wait for news of missing relatives. Search operations remain underway across some of the worst-hit areas.
