PCPA will host the West Coast premiere of “Emma,” Joseph Hanredy’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel.
Romantic adventure, misplaced confidence and a blind date in Highbury.
“Emma” was commissioned and developed by People’s Light Theater and co-developed with Pacific Music Academy Theater – PCPA.
“Emma” is the third Jane Austen novel to be staged by Hanedy after “Pride and Prejudice”,” and “Sense and Sensibility” (with JR Sullivan), both of which have played in major theaters in the United States and abroad, including the PCPA.
“I love Jane Austen, and obviously, I’m not alone,” said director Polly Firestone. “Her relatively small body of work has spawned countless films, TV adaptations, scholarly explorations, societies, spinoffs, parodies; the list goes on.
“In “Emma,” our heroine faces a long journey despite her good heart, luck, beauty, and brain. In fact, it is these gifts that lead to her greatest mistakes: arrogance, Indiscretion and a firm belief in everything she thinks.
“Jane Austen herself wrote that Emma would be the protagonist of ‘None would love anyone but myself. ‘ Yet Miss Austen was wrong,” Firestone said. “Emma was loved by countless readers , as we realize that her mistakes are purely artificial, the result of her strong character and doting father and governess.
“But there’s always room for laughter, because all of Austen’s work is rooted in comedy. It’s the laughter of an affectionate acknowledgment of human frailties: melancholia, talkativeness, pride, overfamiliarity, gossip, miscommunication. The characters who inhabit Highbury may sometimes behave ridiculously, but they are never caricatured.”
Cast includes Emily Trask as Emma; Jordan Stidham, guest and PCPA alumnus, as Mr. Knightley; Mark Buch as Mr. Woodhouse; Phoebe DuBois as Mrs. Weston; Andrew Phil Porter as Mr. Weston; Julia May Abrams as Harriet Smith; George Walker as Mr. Elton; Kitty Balay as Miss. Bates; Lottie Arnold as Jane Farirfax; Kennon Hooks as Frank Churchill .
