Students can now use their K-Cards to purchase a form of entertainment reminiscent of our forest-like rural setting. Summit Ax Throwing opened last summer in Mount Vernon, offering patrons a safe way to get involved in a sport fit for lumberjacks.
Ax throwing is a forestry-related sport that sits alongside such activities as competitive sawing, felling and lighting fires.College students take part in these sports woodcutter gamea tradition that dates back to Dartmouth College in 1947 and has since spread to other schools.
The space is set up with lanes separated by nets, and each lane has a large wooden target at the end. Throwers stand between the two lines and drive their axes into the bull’s-eye of the target. Holes appeared in the wall above each target because the ax was thrown so high—many of which, one employee mentioned, had been planted by the Kenyon football team. Placing the ax on the wood produces a hearty chopping sound that echoes across the wide open space.
“It’s really not as hard as you think,” says Brie Kirby, co-owner of Summit Ax Throwing. “A lot of people think you have to throw an ax as hard as you can to get it to stick, but you really don’t. It’s kind of like a dart; you just have to make the right moves and it sticks.” Indeed, Summit Ax Throwing is open to anyone aged 10 and up wearing closed shoes, so no previous experience as a burly lumberjack is required.
Kirby’s husband, Josh, came up with the idea for the business. “He was wondering what Mount Vernon lacked, the main thing being entertainment. We have a lot of cool outdoor parks, but in the winter or when it rains, we have movie theaters and bowling alleys.”
Whatever the weather, between 5pm and 9pm on Thursdays and between 3pm and 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays, Kenyon students can gather their friends to hone their ax throwing skills. Once the assigned “axe expert” walks the client through the rules and methods, it’s just you, the target, sharp tools and good “axe experience”. (Playing with the word “axe” is a common and amusing feature of Summit Ax Throwing’s ax vibe.)
The process of obtaining the K-Card payment system is not difficult. After speaking with Jan Thomas, Senior Consultant, Community Relations, the system was delivered and installed in one day. However, Summit Ax Throwing’s website does not have an option to book classes via K-Card, so the best way for students to book time slots in 30 minute increments is via email – info@summitaxethrowing.com. One-hour lessons for adults are $25.
The space is suitable for parties, with an area with games and tables where people can eat and relax. “[Customers] You can email us if you want to lock it down for a few hours for a birthday or whatever, bring a bunch of food, and then we’ll lock it down and let you use the space as you please,” Kirby said. Beer and Wine is allowed, but spirits and drunkenness are not.
Whatever the occasion, K-Cards now offer students a “cutting edge” way to have fun in downtown Mount Vernon.
