State Street Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” returns to Santa Barbara for its final three shows on December 17-18 before touring throughout the Northwest states.
The Granada Theater’s holiday classic program features students from the State Street Ballet Academy performing with State Street Ballet’s ensemble, as well as cadets from the company’s professional track program, in Brian Asher Alhadev’s ( Brian Asher Alhadeff, accompanied by the San Luis Obispo Opera Grand Orchestra.
The role of Clara, the girl who dreams of her nutcracker coming true, was cast for the matinee from among the academy students. This year the role will be performed by Olivia Pires on Sunday at 2pm and Sophia Kanard on Saturday at 2pm.
Saturday night’s show featured State Street Ballet professional dancer Emma Matthews, who also performed on tour, as Clara.
The main cast includes Nerea Barrondo, Deise Mendonca and Marika Kobayashi (as the Sugar Plum Fairy), as well as the Cavaliers’ Harold Mendez, Hernan Montenegro and Kaito Yamamoto. Sergei Domrachev as Herr Drosselmeyer, Saori Yamashita and Elizaveta Domracheva as the Snow Queen.
Music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky; choreography by Rodney Gustafson, Gary McKenzie, Marina Fliagina, Cecily MacDougall, Megan Philipp and Chauncey Parsons; costume design by A. Christina Giannini, Nicole Thompson and Mary Etta Lang ; set designs by Daniel Nyiri and Yuriy Samodurov; masks and dolls by Robert Joyce.
Tickets can be purchased through the Granada Theater Box Office and online granada website. Prices range from $38 to $121, with a discounted price of $26 for children 12 and under in select price areas. Student discounts are also available for in-person purchases or by calling the Box Office at 805-899-2222.
