UAE takes legal action against woman who shared abusive video on social media

ABU DHABI: The Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution has launched an investigation and taken legal action against an Arab woman who shared a video on social media verbally attacking participants of the recent Abu Dhabi Book Fair.

Prosecutors filed legal proceedings against the woman on the grounds of inciting public opinion and violating privacy through social media. The suspect allegedly shared the livestreamed video on social media, abusing participants without the victim’s consent.

The video, which has been circulating on social media, shows the suspect verbally attacking the victims and accusing them of attending a public event due to previous convictions abroad.

Prosecutors said that UAE law ensures the rights of all people and does not tolerate any form of violation, trespass or attempt to disrupt public order.

According to Article 44 of Federal Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Rumors and Cybercrime, any use of information networks, electronic information systems or any information technology by any person means a violation of personal privacy, personal or family life without consent, And in violation of the law, eavesdropping, intercepting, recording, transmitting, and leaking conversations, communications, and audio-visual materials in one of the following ways, shooting images of others in any public or private place, making, transmitting, leaking, copying, or retaining electronic images will be punished. Imprisonment of not less than six months and a fine of not less than Dh150,000 and not more than Dh500,000 or either of these penalties.
