4.2-magnitude earthquake hits Afghanistan | World News

An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale struck 149 kilometers north-northeast (NNE) of Kabul, Afghanistan on Saturday, the National Seismological Center (NCS) said.

The NCS said the quake at a depth of 10 km occurred around 4 pm (India time).

NCS tweeted, “Mg: 4.2, Occurred 03-06-2023, 15:55:02 IST, Latitude: 35.84, Longitude: 69.69, Depth: 10km, Location: 149km N of Kabul, Afghanistan”

In Afghanistan, earthquakes occur every 2-3 weeks. On May 11, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake occurred 99 kilometers south-southwest of Faizabad. Likewise, the NCS informed that on May 9, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake was also felt in Fayzabad.

Last month, the Taliban-led Afghanistan National Disaster Management Agency (ANDMA) reported that at least 42 people were killed and 54 others were injured in 13 provinces as a result of last month’s natural disasters.

Shafiullah Rahimi, spokesman for the Taliban-led ministry, said in a video that 341 homes were totally or partially destroyed in these areas, 19,573 acres of farmland were destroyed and 1,354 cattle were lost, mainly due to flash floods during this period Outbreak, Khaama Press reports.



The incidents took place in Kapisa, Maidan Wardak, Takhar, Badakhshan, Ghor, Kandahar, Kunar, Nuristan, Laghman, Paktia, Khost, Daikundi and Nangarhar, Khaama Press reported.

According to news reports, Afghanistan is a country prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, severe winters and avalanches.

Natural disasters have killed more than 1,000 people and injured another 2,000 over the past year, according to officials from the Taliban-led Disaster Management Ministry, Khaama Press reported.
