A man who pretended to be the owner of a car showroom to defraud a resident of Dh40,000 has been told to pay Dh65,000. The defendant, a man of Arab descent, agreed to sell three used cars to residents from the showroom.

The Abu Dhabi Family and Civil Administrative Claims Court directed the Arab man to pay the victim in cash after he was convicted of fraud.

The victim has filed a lawsuit against the defendant, demanding the repayment of the defrauded Dh40,000 and an additional Dh51,000 in moral and material damages.

The victim said in the lawsuit that the Arab man posed as the owner of a used car showroom in Abu Dhabi’s Musaffah area.

The man said he had paid the defendant Dh40,000 in installments after the defendant agreed to sell him three used cars displayed at the showroom. However, after receiving the cash, the Arab refused to hand over the car to him.

The victim then realized the man had lied to him and the car showroom didn’t actually belong to him. He tried unsuccessfully to get his money back from the defendant.

The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court earlier convicted the accused of fraud.

The victim then filed a civil lawsuit against the Arab man, demanding that he return the purchase price and compensate for the loss.

After hearing all parties, the civil court judge ruled, ordering the defendant to repay the Dh40,000 he had received from the plaintiff, and an additional Dh25,000 as damages.

The man was also told to pay the plaintiff’s legal costs.
